From Wilderness to Freedom: The Quiet Before the Calling

Before Moses led Israel to freedom, he spent years in the wilderness. In fact, Moses’ life before the burning bush was far from glamorous. After fleeing Egypt, where he had once lived as a prince, Moses spent 40 years in the desert, tending sheep and learning the quiet rhythms of the land. He wasn’t yet the great leader we read about in the Bible. He was just a man, in the wilderness, with no idea of the massive calling God had on his life.

God often calls you to the quiet before He uses you in the crowd.

Moses’ time in the wilderness wasn’t a detour or a waste—it was preparation. It was in the solitude of the desert where Moses learned patience, dependence on God, and humility. In the quiet, God was molding him, shaping his character, and teaching him to hear His voice. Before Moses could stand before Pharaoh and lead the people of Israel out of Egypt, he needed to spend time in the wilderness, learning to trust God with the small things. It was there, in the silence, that Moses encountered God in a way he never had before—through the burning bush, where God called him by name.

Sometimes, we want to jump straight to the crowd, to the big moments, to the platforms. We want to be used by God in significant ways, but we forget that the wilderness is often where God does His deepest work. The quiet seasons, the behind-the-scenes times, are often the most crucial in preparing us for what’s ahead. Just like Moses, we may feel overlooked or out of place in these quiet moments, but they are not wasted. God is working in the silence to prepare us for the loud, visible calling that’s coming.

If you feel like you’re in a season of wilderness or waiting, know that God is not ignoring you. He’s preparing you. The quiet moments are just as important as the public ones, because it’s in those times that God refines us, teaches us, and equips us for His purposes. Trust that He is working, even when it feels like nothing is happening.

Are you in a wilderness season right now? Take some time to reflect on how God might be using this quiet period to shape you for something greater. What are you learning in this season of solitude? How might God be preparing you for a future calling that you can't yet see?

If you feel like you’re not being “used” right now, remember that the wilderness is a place of growth, not abandonment. God is preparing you for His perfect timing.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the wilderness seasons in my life. Though they may feel uncomfortable or lonely, I know You are working in the quiet to shape me and prepare me for what’s ahead. Help me to trust You in the silence, knowing that You are refining my heart and my purpose. When I’m tempted to rush ahead, remind me that Your timing is perfect. I surrender this season to You, and I trust that You will use me in Your perfect time. In Jesus' name, Amen.
