Be Careful What Feeds You

When I first read Daniel refusing the king's food, I assumed the story was mainly about diet. But the more I studied it, the more I realized it was about devotion. The king's food wasn't just luxurious. It had been dedicated to Babylonian gods before it ever reached Daniel's table. Accepting it wasn't merely about eating. It represented participation. Compromise. Gradually allowing Babylon's values to shape God's people. Daniel understood something we often forget. What consistently feeds us eventually forms us. That principle goes far beyond food. What are we feeding our minds? What are we consuming through our phones? What voices have our attention? What conversations are shaping our thinking? What entertainment are we inviting into our hearts?
And yes... What are we putting into our bodies? Paul reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. That doesn't mean pursuing perfection or living under guilt. It means remembering that what God has entrusted to us matters. Daniel wasn't trying to earn God's love. He was responding to it. His choices reflected who he already belonged to.
Every day we choose what will nourish us. Some things leave us full of life. Others slowly drain our peace, our joy, and our spiritual sensitivity. Maybe today God is inviting you to ask a simple question: Is what I'm consuming helping me become more like Christ... or more like the culture around me? Because what feeds you will eventually shape you. Choose wisely.
Prayer
Lord, help me become more aware of what I'm allowing into my heart, mind, and body. Teach me to choose what brings life instead of what simply satisfies for a moment. May everything I consume draw me closer to You and reflect that I belong to You. Amen.
