When You Don't Know What's Next
"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."— Ephesians 2:10
There are seasons when we're asking God for one thing more than anything else: Clarity. What am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to go? What's next? What is my purpose in this season? We pray. We fast. We wait. We listen. And sometimes... God seems quiet.
Recently, someone was placed heavily on my heart while I was worshiping. And almost simultaneously, I heard the words: "My purpose is You, and my purpose is found in You." It made me stop. Because when we're searching for direction, it's so easy to make the answer the thing we're pursuing. We want God to reveal the job. The opportunity. The next assignment. The open door. The plan.
But maybe before God reveals what's next, He's reminding us Who comes first. Him. Our purpose isn't ultimately found in a position, title, career, ministry, relationship, or opportunity. Our purpose begins in Him. And sometimes God allows us to reach a breaking point where the things that once gave us direction no longer do. Plans break. Doors close. Things we were certain about change.
And suddenly we're standing there holding pieces of a life that doesn't look the way we expected. Brokenness can make us believe something has gone terribly wrong. But what if God isn't intimidated by the pieces? I started thinking about a puzzle. When you're holding one puzzle piece, you can't always tell where it belongs. Sometimes you find a place that looks perfect. The colors match. The edges almost line up. So you push. Turn it. Try another angle. It should fit. But it doesn't.
And sometimes we do the same thing while waiting for direction. We find an opportunity that seems right. A position that makes sense. A plan that looks like the obvious next step. And because we're desperate for clarity, we try to make the piece fit. But maybe clarity doesn't always come from trying harder to figure out where the piece belongs. Maybe sometimes clarity comes from placing it back into the Father's hands.
Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Notice the order. Trust Him. Then let Him direct the path. That's hard when all we want is a map. But God often gives us Himself before He gives us directions. And maybe that's because He knows that if our identity becomes attached to the destination, we'll lose ourselves every time the destination changes.
You are not your job. You are not your title. You are not the position you lost. You are not the opportunity that didn't work out. You are not the plan that fell apart. You are His workmanship. His masterpiece. And sometimes an artist has to break apart what we thought was finished because He knows there's still more to create. Maybe God will use pieces from the last season in ways you cannot recognize yet. The experience. The disappointment. The relationships. The lessons. Even the breaking. None of it has to be wasted in the hands of God.
Romans 8:28 doesn't promise that every piece will feel good. It reminds us that God is able to work through all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. So maybe you don't need to know what the masterpiece looks like yet. Maybe right now your assignment is simply to stay close to the Artist. Let Him hold the pieces. Let Him decide where they belong. Let Him show you which pieces come with you into the next season and which ones were only meant for the last. And while you're waiting for clarity, don't believe the lie that you're without purpose.
Waiting with God is not purposeless. There is purpose in becoming. Purpose in healing. Purpose in learning. Purpose in surrender. Purpose in sitting at His feet before knowing where those feet will take you next. Maybe the answer you're searching for will come tomorrow. Maybe it won't. But today, you can know this... You don't have to see the whole picture to know you're still His masterpiece. And you don't have to know what's next to know Who is holding you now.
Prayer
Father, for the person who is waiting for clarity, direction, and answers, meet them in the uncertainty. When they feel pressure to figure everything out, remind them that their purpose begins and ends in You. Take every broken piece from the seasons behind them.. the disappointment, the loss, the lessons, the gifts, and even the things they don't yet understand... and use them however You choose. Keep them from forcing pieces into places simply because they seem to fit. Give them discernment to recognize Your direction and patience when You haven't revealed it yet. And while they wait for the next answer, let them discover more of You. Remind them that they are still Your workmanship, still being formed, still deeply loved, and still held securely in Your hands. Amen.
