When the World Tries to Rename You

One detail in Daniel 1 caught my attention in a way it never had before.
Before Babylon ever tried to change Daniel's behavior, it first tried to change his identity.
The chief official gave Daniel and his friends new names.
Daniel, whose name meant "God is my Judge," became Belteshazzar... a name honoring a Babylonian god.
Hananiah, "Yahweh is gracious," became Shadrach.
Mishael, "Who is what God is?" became Meshach.
Azariah, "Yahweh has helped," became Abednego.
At first glance, it seems like a simple name change. But in ancient times, a name wasn't just a label. It represented identity. Purpose. Belonging. Allegiance. Babylon wasn't simply changing what they were called. It was trying to redefine who they were.
Isn't that exactly what our culture still does today? The world has plenty of names it wants to give us. Failure. Unworthy. Too broken. Too far gone. Anxiety. Addict. Divorced. Rejected. Success. Influencer. Popular. The labels may change, but the strategy remains the same. If the enemy can convince you to embrace the wrong identity, you'll begin living from it.
But Daniel never accepted Babylon's definition of him. His surroundings changed. His language changed. His education changed. Even his name changed. But his identity remained anchored in God.
That's why verse 8 is so powerful:
"But Daniel resolved..." His conviction wasn't formed in Babylon. It had already been settled. I wonder how often we allow culture to define us instead of Scripture. God doesn't call you what your past calls you. He doesn't call you what your mistakes call you. He calls you what He created you to be. Chosen. Forgiven. Loved. Redeemed. His.
Maybe today you need to stop introducing yourself by the names life has given you and start living from the identity God has already spoken over you.
Because the world may try to rename you.
But only God has the authority to define you.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that my identity is not determined by culture, my past, or the opinions of others. Help me reject every label that doesn't come from You. Teach me to remember who I am because of whose I am. Give me the courage to remain faithful, even when the world tries to redefine me. Amen.
