From Pit to Palace: Trusting God's Process

Before Joseph ever wore a robe of royalty, he was thrown into a pit by his own brothers. The very ones who were supposed to protect him were the ones who betrayed him. Joseph’s journey to the palace wasn’t a straight path; it was paved with rejection, pain, and uncertainty. But through it all, one thing remained true: God had a purpose for him, and that purpose would be fulfilled despite the pits he found himself in.

In life, we often find ourselves in metaphorical pits—seasons of pain, disappointment, and confusion. Maybe it’s a job that feels unfulfilling or a relationship that’s fractured. Perhaps it’s a health crisis, a loss, or even a time of deep spiritual dryness. And in these moments, it can feel like the world is pressing in, and God is distant. But what if these are the very places where God is shaping us?

Think of how God used Joseph’s time in the pit. Though Joseph didn’t know it, every painful step was leading him closer to his destiny. The pit wasn’t the end of his story—it was just the beginning. In the same way, God is at work in our lives, even in the darkest seasons. The Bible tells us that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6). Every pit, every trial, is part of the process of becoming who we’re meant to be. God does not waste our pain; He uses it to refine, strengthen, and prepare us for the purpose He has for us.

There are moments when we want to rush the process, when we wish we could skip the pain and move directly into the promise. But growth doesn’t happen in the absence of struggle. Just as Joseph had to go through the pit, the prison, and the pain of betrayal, we too must endure seasons that feel overwhelming. But the beauty is in knowing that even when we’re in the pit, God is still with us. He is working behind the scenes, even when we can’t see it.

Just as Joseph’s pain led to his purpose—to save nations from famine—your pain has a purpose. The challenge is trusting God in the process, knowing that His plan for us is greater than we can imagine.

Take a moment to reflect on the pits in your own life. What are the painful seasons you’ve walked through? How did God meet you there? Can you look back now and see how He used those times to grow you, shape you, and prepare you for what’s ahead?

In the midst of your current struggles, can you trust that God is using it for your good? He knows the end from the beginning, and He is working in ways that are beyond your understanding.

Prayer:

Lord, I come before You, acknowledging the pain and the pits I’ve walked through. Sometimes, it feels like the road to purpose is too hard, and I can’t see how this struggle will ever lead to anything good. But I choose to trust in Your plan today. Help me to see that You are with me in the pit, just as You were with Joseph. Refine my character, strengthen my faith, and prepare me for the purpose You’ve called me to. May I never forget that Your ways are higher than mine and that You are faithful, even in the hardest of seasons. In Jesus' name, Amen.
